On May 29, Justices N V Anjaria, Vijay Bishnoi, and Atul S Chandurkar officially took oath as Judges of the Supreme Court of India. The appointment of these distinguished judges follows the Supreme Court Collegium’s recommendation made on May 26, and the subsequent approval by the President of India.
The Government of India issued the official notification of their elevation on May 29. The new judges bring a wealth of experience from their respective High Courts to the country’s highest judicial forum.

Background of the Judges
Justice N V Anjaria was serving as the Chief Justice of the Karnataka High Court prior to his elevation. His parent High Court is the Gujarat High Court. His tenure as a Supreme Court judge will continue till March 23, 2030.
Justice Vijay Bishnoi, before his elevation, served as the Chief Justice of the Gauhati High Court. He hails from the Rajasthan High Court. His tenure on the Supreme Court bench is set until March 25, 2029. Justice Bishnoi took his oath in Hindi, reflecting a connection with regional languages.

Justice Atul S Chandurkar was formerly a judge of the Bombay High Court. His term as a Supreme Court judge will last till April 7, 2030.
Chief Justice of India, D Y Chandrachud, administered the oath to the newly appointed judges at the Supreme Court. The oath-taking marks a significant moment for the Court, especially as the appointments fill the strength of the Supreme Court back to its full capacity of 34 judges.
“The appointment of Justices N V Anjaria, Vijay Bishnoi, and Atul S Chandurkar is in accordance with the Collegium's recommendation made on May 26 and approved by the President on May 29,” as per the Supreme Court’s official communication.

The addition of these three judges has brought the Supreme Court back to its sanctioned strength of 34 judges. However, the Court will soon witness another vacancy due to the impending retirement of Justice Bela M Trivedi on June 9.

Justice Anjaria’s experience as Chief Justice of Karnataka High Court and his judicial contributions in the Gujarat High Court will enhance the Supreme Court’s strength.
