Madhya Pradesh High Court takes suo motu cognizance of Indore truck accident, directs police affidavit and action plan

The Madhya Pradesh High Court at Jabalpur has stepped in after a horrifying truck accident in Indore left three dead and more than thirty-five injured. The court on Tuesday initiated a suo motu public interest litigation (PIL), taking note of media reports and disturbing videos showing a heavy truck ploughing through a busy residential stretch.

According to a report published in Dainik Bhaskar on September 16, a truck entered the Kalani Nagar Square - Bada Ganpati Square route during peak evening hours. In a rash and negligent spree, it rammed into multiple vehicles, injuring dozens and killing three people. Eyewitness videos, later uploaded online, showed chaos on the streets as the truck hit two-wheelers, cars, and even pedestrians before catching fire.

The bench, led by Chief Justice Sanjeev Sachdeva and Justice Vinay Saraf, expressed concern over how such a vehicle could freely enter a crowded residential zone.

"The Commissioner of Police must explain how the truck was allowed to travel nearly 2 kms without intervention" the bench observed, while stressing the need for preventive measures.

The court issued notices to the State and impleaded the Commissioner of Police, Indore, as a respondent. He has been directed to file an affidavit detailing lapses and future safeguards. The matter will be heard again on September 23, with a senior police officer ordered to be present in person.
