Supreme Court Implemented SC/ST Reservation in Staff Recruitment for the First Time Under CJI Gavai

In a major and progressive move, the Supreme Court of India has introduced reservation for Scheduled Castes (SC) and Scheduled Tribes (ST) in its staff recruitment process for the first time.

This historic development took place under the leadership of Chief Justice of India (CJI) BR Gavai, who is the second CJI from the Scheduled Caste community. The new reservation policy was formally communicated to the staff through an internal circular, marking a historic change in the Court's recruitment practices.

"As per the directions of the competent authority, it is notified for the information of all concerned that the Model Reservation Roster and Register has been uploaded on SUPNET and the same has been made effective from 23.06.2025," - Supreme Court Registrar (Circular dated June 24, 2025)

The reservation roster details have been officially uploaded on SUPNET and will be applicable to all future recruitments from June 23, 2025.

The model roster incorporates direct recruitment policies for several key positions, including:

  • Senior Personal Assistant
  • Assistant Librarian
  • Junior Court Assistant
  • Junior Court Assistant-cum-Junior Programmer
  • Junior Court Attendant
  • Chamber Attendant (R)

As per the policy guidelines:

“The SC category is entitled to 15% and the ST category to 7.5% of the employment positions.”

Additionally, the Supreme Court has invited feedback from staff members regarding any discrepancy in the roster or register.

“In case of objections/representations raised by any staff member regarding mistakes or inaccuracies in the roster or register, they may inform the Registrar (Recruitment) about the same,”- Supreme Court Registrar

This first implementation of the reservation model in the Supreme Court is seen as a significant step towards inclusiveness and equal opportunity within the administrative structure of the judiciary.
