Durgappa, a member of the tribal Bovi community, alleges that in 2014, he was falsely implicated in a fabricated honey-trap case, leading to his dismissal from IISc. He claims to have faced caste-based abuse and threats during his tenure.
In response to the court's decision, Gopalakrishnan expressed his disappointment, stating, "I have always upheld principles of fairness, justice, and respect for all individuals, irrespective of their background. It is distressing that a law meant to safeguard marginalized communities is being misused to level false accusations against me." He emphasized his trust in the judiciary and belief that justice will prevail.
