The Supreme Court on Thursday expanded its advisory committee dealing with transgender rights, allowing an application moved by the court-appointed amicus curiae.
The order was passed by a Bench of Justices J.B. Pardiwala and R. Mahadevan while hearing a miscellaneous application linked to an ongoing public interest case. The matter is part of a larger writ petition pending before the Supreme Court of India concerning transgender rights.
The application was filed by senior advocate Jayna Kothari, appearing as amicus curiae. She requested the court to include Aparna Mehrotra, Senior Associate at the Centre for Law and Policy Research (CLPR), as a member of the advisory committee constituted by an earlier order dated October 17, 2025.

The Bench noted that the earlier committee included Nithya Rajshekhar as CLPR’s representative. However, she is no longer associated with the organisation.
Clarifying the position, the court observed that Rajshekhar would continue as a member of the committee. The Bench said this was due to her “extensive work undertaken… with regard to transgender rights.”
At the same time, the court allowed the request for an additional member. “In the interest of functioning of the Advisory Committee,” the judges appointed Aparna Mehrotra to represent CLPR and its academic work in the field.
With these directions, the miscellaneous application was disposed of.
