On July 29, 2025, the Supreme Court of India adjourned the hearing in the Public Interest Litigation (PIL) filed by the Centre for Public Interest Litigation (CPIL) against the Union of India. The case was listed as Writ Petition (Civil) No. 1373/2018 under the PIL-W section.
The matter came up before the Bench of Justice B.V. Nagarathna and Justice K.V. Viswanathan.

Senior advocate Mr. Prashant Bhushan appeared for CPIL, along with Mr. Anurag Tiwary. Representing the Union of India, Solicitor General Mr. Tushar Mehta led the government’s side, assisted by Additional Solicitor General Mrs. Aishwarya Bhati and other legal officers.
During the hearing, the Solicitor General requested more time to prepare and submit written arguments.
Honouring the request, the Supreme Court adjourned the case and posted it for further hearing on August 5, 2025, instructing that it will be taken up immediately after fresh cases are heard.
