Lawyers and staff at the Supreme Court of India can finally breathe easy. After days of patchy network and frequent call drops, Reliance Jio’s mobile services have been restored on the Cell-on-Wheel (CoW) towers installed within the court complex. The disruption, which had left many advocates frustrated, was officially addressed through a circular issued on September 4, 2025.
Background
The Supreme Court premises, known for its heavy footfall of lawyers, litigants, and journalists, has been dependent on temporary CoW towers to ensure uninterrupted telecom connectivity. These towers are stationed near the Advocates’ Parking area (Gate E), UCO Bank E-Lobby, and Gate A. In recent days, however, users of Reliance Jio found themselves cut off, with internet speeds dropping drastically and calls often failing to connect.

The circular explains that the disruption occurred due to an ongoing upgrade of services. “With the consistent endeavours and persuasion of the Computer Cell of the Supreme Court of India, the telecom services of Reliance Jio (4G, 5G) have now been restored,” the note confirmed.
Court’s Observations
While this was not a courtroom hearing, the language of the circular carried a tone of accountability. It acknowledged the inconvenience faced by lawyers, clerks, and even court reporters who rely on strong internet connectivity to manage case documents, attend virtual consultations, and send real-time updates.
Officials pointed out that Airtel’s services were already active at towers near the UCO Bank e-lobby and Gate A, while Vodafone Idea continued to operate smoothly across all three CoW sites. Jio, however, had lagged behind. The Computer Cell clarified that Reliance Jio is now functioning properly at Advocates’ Parking and the UCO Bank location, and work is underway to restore full services at Gate A as well.

The Supreme Court’s technology wing formally announced that Reliance Jio services were back in action, except at Gate A where restoration will happen shortly.
The circular closed with a candid note: “The inconvenience caused during the disruption of services is regretted.”
For thousands of lawyers and visitors to the top court, this update comes as a relief, ensuring that their daily reliance on digital tools and constant communication will no longer be hampered by network glitches.
