Supreme Court Upholds Bail Of Murder Accused Over ‘money and power can get you anything in this country’ Social Media Video

The Supreme Court has dismissed a plea seeking cancellation of bail granted to an accused in a murder case, declining to interfere with the Punjab and Haryana High Court’s decision to release him on bail.

The challenge was based, among other things, on a social media video posted by the accused after his release, in which he allegedly said that “money and power can get you anything in this country.”

The case arose from a dispute over installation of a tin shed on a plot in Berla village, Haryana, on October 27, 2022. According to the prosecution, Vishal allegedly assaulted members of the complainant’s family and Gajanand sustained a head injury. Gajanand later died.

Vishal was arrested on October 28, 2022. His bail application was rejected by the Sessions Court in February 2024, while four subsequent bail pleas before the High Court were also unsuccessful.

On April 23, 2026, the High Court granted him regular bail in his fifth petition. Justice Rajesh Bhardwaj noted that the prosecution version was not fully supported by the medical evidence and that the accused had remained in custody for more than three years while only eight of 31 prosecution witnesses had been examined.

The complainant relied on the social media video to argue that the accused’s statement reflected the influence of money and power.

The Supreme Court, however, did not consider the video sufficient to justify cancellation of bail. The Bench comprising Justices Vikram Nath, Augustine George Masih and Sandeep Mehta orally observed:

“Alright. It’s an achievement. He gained his liberty, he was celebrating. If he had money and power, he would have never gotten inside. The money was the lawyer’s fee.”

The Supreme Court dismissed the complainant’s plea and declined to interfere with the bail granted by the Punjab and Haryana High Court.
