"Such actions violate professional ethics and the dignity of the legal profession." - Bar Council of Delhi Notice

This official notice was issued by Chairman Surya Prakash Khatri, highlighting that some advocates are posting videos, personal interactions, interviews, or images related to legal cases on social media, with the intent to attract clients directly or indirectly. The Council labeled these actions as "unethical canvassing."

The notice particularly pointed out the rise of “self-styled legal influencers,” many of whom are not even registered or licensed to practice. These individuals are sharing opinions on sensitive legal matters, which not only misleads the public but also directly violates Rule 36 of the Bar Council of India Rules.

"Violation of Rule 36 amounts to serious professional misconduct, leading to disciplinary action." - Bar Council of Delhi

The Council clarified that any advocate found violating these rules could face disciplinary action under Section 35 of the Advocates Act, 1961. This section allows for the suspension or cancellation of a lawyer’s license to practice.

Finally, the notice directed that all such advocates who are active on social media in this manner must immediately remove their content. Failing to do so will result in action being initiated against them on an individual basis.
