Kolkata witnessed a strong protest from the legal fraternity on August 22, 2025, as lawyers from the Calcutta High Court and the Central Administrative Tribunal (CAT) Kolkata Bench abstained from attending court proceedings. The decision comes after Advocate Manujendra Narayan Roy was reportedly attacked by police personnel from the Bidhannagar East Police Station, resulting in a fracture of his pelvic bone.
Background of the Assault
The incident occurred late on August 20, when Mr. Roy alleged that he was "deliberately and brutally assaulted" by the police officers. This shocking act prompted immediate outrage among lawyers, highlighting concerns over misuse of authority and the safety of legal professionals.
Bar Associations Demand Accountability
In response, the Calcutta High Court Bar Association convened an urgent meeting and resolved that its members would not participate in any judicial proceedings on August 22, 2025.
"Members of the Bar Association shall abstain from court activities until proper and satisfactory action is taken against the erring officers," the association stated.
The situation will be reviewed on August 25 after details of any punitive measures are communicated.
The CAT Bar Association expressed similar solidarity, condemning the police for abusing their power.
"Violence by authorities is not justice - it is misuse of power," the association remarked.
They announced that their members would also refrain from judicial duties on the protest day, underscoring the collective stance of the legal community.
This coordinated boycott sends a strong message about accountability and respect for the rule of law. By halting proceedings, lawyers emphasize that no act of brutality can go unchecked and that legal safeguards must protect every member of the profession.
